Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Club Christmas Party will feature one of the star acts of the 2018 Ribble Valley Jazz Festival - Ubunye - the seven-piece Yorkshire-based ensemble who play an inspirational blend of jazz, Isiggi - traditional Zulu music, and Afro-pop. The delivered truly a knockout performance at a sell-out show at The Atrium in May and we are delighted to have them visit Clitheroe again for this special festive shakedown.
Ubunye (which means 'one-ness') unites singers from Kwa Zulu, Natal in South Africa (now Huddersfield based) with gospel and RnB players from Yorkshire.
Imagine the raw power of African voices in harmony; the pounding rhythm of Africa blended with the explosive energy of a live band. This young and vibrant group of Zule performers and seasoned musicians from UK reach back into the past to combine ancient tradition with contemporary flair. Expect a soulful goose-bump inducing experience!
Ubunye is an ambassador for Jazz North’s Northernline band programme.
Line-up: Thanda (nani) Gumede, Nokuthula Zondi-Kamudyariwa, Xolani Mbatha - vocals; Dave Evans - keyboard; Alex Wibrew - drums; Nik Rutherford - guitar; Barry Rickarby - bass.
The ticket includes a South African curry with meat or veg options prior to the band’s performance. Following the food, the tables will be cleared, start the rhythms and get dancing to the fabulous sounds of Ubunye. Please pre-book well in advance via The Grand website to avoid disappointment.
